Optimism and Japan's Auto Makers |

Confounding expectations, Honda Motor and Mitsubishi Motors had some good news this week: They forecast a profitable year ahead.
Both auto makers seem intent on cost-cutting their way to profitability -- what with revenues forecast to fall 16% and 24%, respectively, in the coming 12 months. So be it. Tough times require tough measures, and if Honda and Mitsubishi have flab in their factories, now's the time to slim down.
The relative optimism sits in stark contrast to the companies' dismal fourth-quarter results -- a 42% drop in sales at Honda and 57% at Mitsubishi.
