Berkshire Hathaway Inc.'s (BRKA, BRKB) so-called baby-b shares got off to a fast start Thursday, rising 2.8% to $71.40 on volume of more than 300,000 shares at the market's open.
The split went into effect Thursday, one day after Berkshire Hathaway's shareholders approved a 50-to-1 split of its class B common stock as part of its planned purchase of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. (BNI).
The split reduced the price of each share to about $67, from a trading price of more than $3,000.
Shares traded heavily pre-market and were recently up more than 2% on volume of 1.8 million shares.
