Home prices show modest 0.3% gain in January |

Home prices rose modestly in January, according to a closely watched national index, an unexpected piece of good news for a housing market that has struggled to hold its momentum this year.
The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller index of 20 metropolitan areas rose 0.3% in January from the prior month. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg had expected the index to fall month-over-month.
The index was down only 0.7% from the same month one year ago.
Despite the gains, David M. Blitzer, chairman of the Index Committee at Standard & Poor's, characterized the report as "mixed," with fewer cities posting month-to-month gains.
