General Motors said Tuesday that its sales in the United States rose 5.4 percent last month and that the auto industry’s recovery appeared to regain some momentum.
Excluding the four brands that G.M. has discontinued or sold, the carmaker said its sales were up 24.6 percent last month from July 2009, when it emerged from bankruptcy protection. July was the 10th consecutive month that sales of G.M.’s four active brands increased on a year-over-year basis; two of the brands more than doubled their sales from a year ago.
Buick sales increased 137 percent to 16,799 vehicles, and Cadillac sales increased 142 percent to 14,919.
“When we say we want to design, build and sell the world’s best vehicles, we’re not talking about just one vehicle, one brand, or one month,” Don Johnson, G.M.’s vice president for United States sales operations. “Our July results again reflect that each of our brands has contributed significantly to our gains.”
