Wal-Mart is gearing up to move into urban markets like Chicago and Los Angeles, the Financial Times reports.
Bill Simon, CEO of Wal-Mart's U.S. business, has said expansion plans will be outlined next month.
The FT reports Wal-Mart ( WMT - news - people ) has begun looking for sites for smaller format stores in urban markets including Chicago, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Reno and Detroit. The sites Wal-Mart has been considering are in the range of 20,000 to 50,000 square feet.
The newspaper noted that while Wal-Mart's 185,000 square feet supercenter is its most profitable format, it has been testing 10,000 and 20,000 square feet stores in Arizona, and is also developing a smaller version of the supercenter.
