Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said it will provide free shipping on more than 60,000 items without the need for a minimum purchase size or subscription plan, taking aim at online retailers such as Amazon.com Inc. in the fight for holiday shoppers on the Internet.

Learn More .Retailers are looking for ways to attract customers to their websites as online shopping growth has persisted while bricks-and-mortar outlets have seen little, if any, sales gains. Wal-Mart has seen same-store sales drop at its U.S. locations for five-straight quarters.
Last month, several dozen U.S. retailers said they are banding together to take on Amazon by striking at one of online shoppers' biggest concerns: shipping costs. Under a cooperative program called ShopRunner, the retailers are mimicking Amazon by dangling a $79 loyalty program that offers unlimited two-day shipping.
