Boeing Plans To Boost 777 Production Again in 2013 |
Wall Street Journal - Dec 20, 2010 |
Boeing Co. (BA) announced plans to again boost production of its 777 aircraft, the latest sign of increasing demand in the airplane industry.
The aircraft-making giant said it will build 8.3 of the 777 airplanes a month starting in the first quarter of 2013 because of "strong customer demand globally." After being slammed during the recession, demand for airliners has started to pick up of late as consumers have returned to traveling.
"We see 2010 as the year of overall economic recovery within the industry and 2011 a year where airlines return to profitability," said Randy Tinseth, vice president of marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "As a result, we anticipate an increase in demand for airplanes in 2012 and beyond."
Though a couple of years further down the line, the latest planned increase is the second announcement of a ramp-up of production for the 777, a line of airliners that can seat more than 300 passengers. In March, Boeing had announced that it would boost production to seven 777s per month in mid-2011, up from its previous production level of five of them a month.
