United Continental to Expand Economy Plus to Continental Jets |

Continental Airlines is going to adopt merger partner United Airlines' popular Economy Plus seating, which offers extra legroom in coach, to better align the combined carriers' product offering, the parent company said Thursday.
Continental's management, which effectively runs the combined United Continental Holdings Inc., has been looking at the revenue and customer loyalty generated by United Economy Plus since the two airlines closed their merger last October. The choice essentially was to add back seats on the United planes or remove seats from Continental planes to harmonize their coach product.
Jim Compton, executive vice president and chief revenue officer of the new United, said the revenue generated by the elite frequent-fliers who occupy those seats, plus that from fliers who pay for the privilege, outweighs the theoretical loss of revenue from having fewer seats on the planes. Moreover, those passengers are significantly more satisfied with their travel experience, he said, because "not surprisingly, people prefer more space."
