General Motors Co. estimated U.S. industry sales rose at a 14 million annualized pace, up from 12.3 million a year ago, and the strongest showing in more than a year. It expects industry sales to reach between 13 million and 13.5 million for the entire year.
On Thursday, Chrysler reported its U.S. November sales rose 45% while Nissan's sales rose 19%, Ford Motor Co.'s 13% and General Motors's nearly 7% over the same month a year ago.
Results at GM, the largest U.S. auto maker, illustrate the strong lift that sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks are now providing the industry. Its SUV and truck sales climbed 25% and passenger cars rose 1%, both from a year ago. Overall sales rose 6.9% to 180,402 vehicles.
