Forbes - Dec 28, 2011 |
While stocks wait for signs of a Santa rally this week, the biggest winners in the Dow Jones Industrial Average this year are ending the year up 20% or more. Kraft Foods, Home Depot and Pfizer were all up on the year by 19%, 20% and 23% respectively, according to a release from Dow Jones Indexes late Tuesday. International Business Machines was up 26%, and McDonald’s led the list, marking its second year in a row of being in the Dow’s top-five annual performers, up 30%.
Home Depot is the other stock that is ending 2011 in the top five again, after finishing last year up 25%. The Dow is on track to outperform the other benchmark indexes this year, up 5.1% Wednesday.
One notable stock that was missing from the winners on the list this year is Caterpillar. Last year the company was the number one performer, with a 69% increase in its stock, as demand for its building and construction products surged outside the U.S. and in emerging markets. This year the company had a high bar to reach in its earnings reports, and the stock is ending the year down 2.3%.
