Slim majority of economists don't foresee '08 recession |

The economy will likely grow at the slowest pace in six years in 2008, but a slim majority of economists still expect the USA to avoid a recession this year, according to a survey out Monday.
Gross Domestic Product, the broadest measure of economic activity within U.S. borders, is expected to grow 1.8% this year, according to a survey of 49 forecasters conducted Jan. 25-Feb. 13 by the National Association for Business Economists.
That is down from the 2.6% gain expected when the economists were last surveyed in November and would be the slowest since 2002, when the economy was recovering from the 2001 recession.
But 55% of those surveyed said they did not expect a recession this year. And two-thirds of those who do expect a downturn said they anticipated it would be short and shallow.
