EU Fines Microsoft $1.35 Billion |

European antitrust regulators have imposed a fine of $1.35 billion on Microsoft, saying the Redmond, Wash., software maker failed to comply with a ruling that dealt with allowing access to its programming documentation.
A European Commission decision in March 2004 required Microsoft to disclose complete interoperability information to developers of work group server operating systems, and to do so at a reasonable price. However, according to the EC, Microsoft was charging too much, until it changed its prices last October.
"Microsoft was the first company in fifty years of [European Union] competition policy that the Commission has had to fine for failure to comply with an antitrust decision," said European Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes, in a statement. "I hope that today's decision closes a dark chapter in Microsoft's record of noncompliance with the Commission's March 2004 decision."
