Microsoft Expands Web-Based Software Sales to Fend Off Google |

Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, will expand sales of business programs that work over the Internet, countering a challenge from Google Inc.
The company has won large customers such as Blockbuster Inc. and Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc., Senior Vice President Chris Capossela said in an interview. Today Microsoft will begin testing online editions of its Exchange and SharePoint Server programs for companies with fewer than 5,000 employees, he said.
As many as half of Microsoft's customers for the Exchange e-mail and SharePoint information sharing software may use the Web-based versions in five years, Capossela said. Microsoft is competing with Google and International Business Machines Corp. for the attention of chief information officers who want to trim their technology costs.
