US Airways Places Order For 92 Aircraft From Airbus |
RTT News - Jun 18, 2007 |
Airways Group Inc. (LCC) revealed that it agreed to terms with Airbus S.A.S. for the purchase of a total of 92 aircraft, comprising 60 single-aisle A320-family aircraft and 32 widebody aircraft, including the next generation A350 XWB. The plan also includes an increase in the number of A350 XWBs ordered by the airline. The company further said that the order is contingent upon execution of definitive purchase agreements, expected in the coming weeks. France-based Airbus is a unit of European Aeronautic Defense & Space Co. or EADS.
Tempe, Arizona-based U.S. Airways said that the A320-family planes would replace 60 older aircraft in the airline's fleet. The order for A350 XWBs is in both the 800 and larger 900 series configuration. The company increased the order for the number of A350s by two to 22 aircraft and said that it expects to take delivery of the first A350-800 featuring Rolls Royce engines in 2014, thereby becoming the North American launch customer for the fleet type. In addition, the company secured purchase rights for additional planes in order to allow for the eventual retirement of all other widebody jets that would leave the airline with a single intercontinental fleet type of A350 XWBs.
