Southwest Airlines rang in 30 years as a publicly traded company Wednesday, even as the airline's executives work to transform the nation's largest discount carrier to fly through an increasingly hostile business environment.
Executives with the Dallas-based airline said they will reduce their growth plans this year and acknowledged that it will be tough to achieve profitability goals as they face high fuel costs and softer-than-expected travel demand. And they said that later this year they will unveil new features that could include some type of assigned seating, upgrades to Southwest's frequent-flier program and a new focus on luring business travelers to bring in more money.
