A FIRST: Detroit automakers get less than half of U.S. sales |

Detroit automakers accounted for less than half of all monthly U.S. sales for the first time ever, but company officials said they were sticking to plans that stressed profits, not volumes, as slumping July auto sales were released Wednesday.
General Motors Corp.'s sales fell 22.3% in July compared with the same month a year ago. Ford Motor Co. dropped 19.1% and the Chrysler Group was down 8.4%, according to Autodata Corp.
The combined market share for traditional Detroit brands and those that GM and Ford own outright was 49.4% for July. The figures include Saab in the GM family, Volvo, Land Rover and Jaguar with Ford and Chrysler Group-only sales.
