Personal-computer maker Gateway Inc. on Monday said it agreed to be acquired by Acer Inc. for $710 million, giving the Taiwan-based vendor a bigger foothold in the U.S. market.
Under the deal, Acer will pay $1.90 for each share of Irvine, Calif.-based Gateway, the one-time Wall Street star that's struggled mightily since the end of a high-tech boom in 2001.
Shares of Gateway, which closed Friday at $1.21, soared nearly 50% in the first few minutes of trading.
Although the purchase price represents a 57% premium, it's far below Gateway's all-time high of $84 set in November 1999.
