Vonage, Nortel Networks Settle Phone-Patent Dispute |
Bllomberg - Dec 31, 2007 |
Vonage Holdings Corp., the unprofitable Internet phone-service provider, resolved a patent dispute with Nortel Networks Corp. that threatened to shut down some Vonage calling features.
The companies will each license three patents to the other, Nortel spokesman Mohammed Nakhooda said today in an e-mailed statement. They'll drop claims relating to past damages, and claims related to other patents will be dismissed, said Vonage and Nortel, North America's biggest telephone-equipment maker. Vonage shares rose as much as 10 percent.
The agreement leaves Holmdel, New Jersey-based Vonage with one major patent dispute left to fight, according to a list of cases the company included in a Nov. 14 regulatory filing. Vonage settled at least four other patent suits this year, including claims by the three largest U.S. phone companies.
