Rio Tinto, Komatsu to automate mining operations at Pilbara in Australia |

Rio Tinto PLC said it will work with Japan's Komatsu to automate operations at the iron ore mine in Pilbara in Australia before the end of 2008.
This process will feature the Komatsu Autonomous Haulage System, Rio Tinto said, adding that this system will be more widely deployed in new and existing Rio Tinto iron ore operations by 2010.
Separately, the miner said other efforts to transform Pilbara into a 'mine of the future' include controlling operations from 1,300 km away at a Perth centre, driverless trains to carry the ore, a driverless truck fleet and remote control 'intelligent' drills.
