EBay rewrites playbook to compete better in online auctions |
San Jose Mercury New - Jan 30, 2008 |
EBay announced aggressive fee cuts and other measures Tuesday to strengthen its game in the increasingly competitive field of online auctions.
The moves were announced by the San Jose online auction giant's soon-to-be president and chief executive at the annual eBay Forum in Washington, D.C.
"EBay is at a crossroads," John Donahoe, who will replace Meg Whitman at the end of March, told the conference. "To maintain our leadership position in e-commerce, we can no longer afford to make incremental changes to meet our customers' needs. We need to redo our playbook and we need to do it fast."
The company outlined two major changes. First, it said it will reduce the fees it charges sellers to list products on its Web site 25 to 50 percent, while increasing commissions on products that are sold. EBay also will give fee breaks and other perks to sellers who score highest in customer satisfaction.
