Merger mania continues with Merck-Schering deal |

Intent on fortifying its business, Merck & Co. said yesterday it will acquire fellow drugmaker Schering-Plough in a $41.1 billion deal that will give it a pair of prospective blockbuster products within a few years and will strengthen its ability to make new cancer drugs and potent biologic medicines in the future.
The first mega-merger in Merck's history combines two companies with a collective New Jersey work force of 15,000 and deep roots in the state's pharmaceutical industry. The two drugmakers have worked together for years making cardiovascular medicines, which some analysts believe will help smooth out the process of combining businesses.
