Markets Buzz About Alcatel-Lucent |

Investors on Wednesday gave a strong lift to shares of Alcatel-Lucent, the Franco-American telecom equipment maker created by an $11 billion merger nearly three years ago.
Its stock shot up as much as 16 percent in European trading, a move that seemed partly due to an analyst’s upgrade and partly because of chatter that the company could be acquired by a rival Chinese manufacturer — speculation that some analysts quickly dismissed.
Reuters reported Wednesday on market speculation that Huawei Technologies and ZTE, two large Chinese manufactures of telecom gear, were interested in Alcatel. Both Chinese companies say they have not heard anything about such a deal, and a spokesman for Alcatel-Lucent in Paris told Dealbook that it does not comment on rumors.
