Housing starts and building permits in August rose to their highest levels in nine months, but the gains were led by multifamily and apartment construction.
Housing starts for single-family homes fell 3 percent. Total housing starts rose 1.5 percent to an annual rate of 598,000. Building permits rose 2.7 percent in August. However, single-family permits were flat.
Multifamily starts rose 25.3 percent from an all-time low in July. Multifamily permits rose to 117,000 units.
Starts were down in the South, up in the Midwest and Northeast, and flat in the West.
