All Nippon, Continental and United propose venture |

All Nippon Airways Co., Continental Airlines Inc.and UAL Corp.'s United Airlines have asked the U.S. Department of Transportation to exempt them from antitrust liability and enable them to create "a more efficient and comprehensive trans-Pacific network, generating substantial service and pricing benefits for consumers." In a statement Thursday, the airlines said that the joint venture would enable the three carriers "to compete more effectively with other global alliances, each of which has a significant presence in Tokyo." The venture would enable the three carriers to jointly manage scheduling, pricing and sales, the statement said. In July, the DoT granted United and Continental antitrust immunity to coordinate schedules and fares for services outside the U.S.
