Greek Parliament Passes Austerity Measures |

Greece’s Parliament passed a package of tough austerity measures on Thursday designed to stave off an economic collapse.
The vote was seen as crucial in helping Greece secure a financial rescue package from Europe, but its passage stirred immediate concerns about adding to unrest among the thousands of protesters massed outside of Parliament. A small clutch of black-clad youths broke away from the main crowd and began hurling stones after the vote.
But for the most part, the mood outside Parliament hovered in an uneasy calm as demonstrators decried the newly approved spending cuts and taxes, which aimed to shore up Greece’s foundering finances. But with thousands of demonstrators, many of them employees of Greece’s public sector, facing a line of riot police, tensions were rising one day after the protests took a sharply violent turn.
