HP and Dell bid up 3Par price |

Hewlett-Packard and Dell waged a bidding war last week for 3Par, the Fremont maker of storage products. The initial offer of about $1.15 billion had increased to $2 billion by Friday, when HP topped Dell's latest bid. 3Par sells hardware and software that make it easier and cheaper to store information. While that's seen as a hot growth area, 3Par is an unprofitable company with less than $200 million in sales last year - leaving some observers baffled. "It is a head scratcher," said Mike Shinnick, an HP investor at Wasatch Advisers. "The real question is: Can you make that money off it going forward? It's very questionable."
