Monster Survey Suggests Hiring Pick-Up While ADP Stays Gloomy |

Ahead of Friday's all important jobs and unemployment data, two reports give different views about the state of the labor market. The ADP National Employment Report released on Wednesday painted a gloomy picture, emphasizing the 39,000 jobs lost from August to September, the first decline in seven months. On the other hand, Monster Worldwide's Monster Employment Index released Thursday showed a 1% increase in online demand for labor for September, up16% from one year ago and notching its eighth consecutive month of improvement.
It is necessary to recognize that both surveys measure different things. While the ADP ( ADP - news - people ) employment survey is based on a sample of private businesses and employees reporting hiring or lay-offs, the Monster Employment Index measures employer recruitment activity online, and so constitutes a proxy for labor demand.
