It's a good thing eating doesn't make you sleepy, as some folks believe. Otherwise, how would you get your post-Thanksgiving butt out of bed in time to head over to Macy's for its unprecedented Black Friday 4 a.m. opening?
In case you missed the news, Macy's ( M - news - people ) has decided to get into the early-opening arms race, nuking whatever distinction once existed between a "department" store and a crass discounter. Nonetheless, it's still flinging open its gates four hours later than Walmart, which is opening at midnight. Not to be outdone, Sears is staying open all day on Thanksgiving for the first time in its history.
Sure, there's a retail logic behind ginning up more excitement around this important make-or-break day. Macy's and Walmart ( WMT - news - people ) know that consumers remain on strike. They are not just strapped; they are spiritually queasy about the fundamental ideology of unrestrained consumption.
