PC shipments continue to slip in first quarter |

Personal computer shipments slipped in the first quarter of 2011, as the industry’s growth rate slowed following robust gains over the past year, according to industry reports released Wednesday.
Global PC shipments totaled 80.6 million units, down 3.2% from the year-earlier period, according to data from IDC. Analyst David Daoud said the PC market appeared poised for a decline after recent momentum the previous year.
“There was so much growth action in the first quarter of 2010, we were bound to see a rubber band effect” in the first quarter of 2011, he said in an interview.
Data from Gartner Inc. showed a smaller decline, with global shipments falling 1.1% to 84.25 million units. Analyst Mikako Kitagawa said in a statement that “low prices for consumer PCs, which had long stimulated growth, no longer attracted buyers” due to new types of products hitting the market.
