Asia Set for Larger Role at IMF |

Asia is likely to come out of the International Monetary Fund's crisis with enhanced political standing even if the eventual successor to Dominique Strauss-Kahn doesn't hail from the region.
Even before the IMF succession issue came to the fore, with the arrest of Mr. Strauss-Kahn in New York for attempted rape, China's top official at the IMF, Zhu Min, was expected eventually to get a deputy managing director's slot.
If Mr. Strauss-Kahn does give up the IMF slot, Asia is likely to play a power-broker role, said a former Group of 20 official from the region. That's because the next IMF chief would need the backing of Asia, the global economy's fastest growing region, as a way to endorse the validity of the selection process. "This will raise the voice of Asia," said the official.
