US jobless claims fall to five-week low |

An encouraging decline in new claims for unemployment insurance has raised hopes of robust job creation when the US reports non-farm payrolls data on Friday.
Initial jobless claims fell by 9,000 to 397,000, according to the labour department, while the four-week moving average of claims – regarded as more reliable – fell by 2,000 to 404,500. Analysts regard claims below 400,000 as a cut-off point marking robust jobs growth.
But growing signs of stability in the US labour market, albeit at a weak level of overall job creation, may not be enough to prevent a rise in the unemployment rate, perhaps from 9.1 to 9.2 per cent, in Friday’s payrolls report.
