Wall Street Journal - Feb 6, 2012 |
German Chancellor Angela Merkel Monday said she opposes an insolvency of Greece, which is in talks over new funding to prevent the country going into bankruptcy.
"We refuse to acknowledge Greece's bankruptcy. We can't accept this," Merkel said in an interview with German television station ZDF, and published in a statement the public broadcaster published on its website.
Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy gave a joint interview to the broadcasters ZDF and France 2 to be aired at 1820 GMT.
Merkel added there would only be a second Greek bailout program "if the sustainability of Greek finances is ensured."
The comments come after Merkel and Sarkozy met in Paris earlier Monday. The payment would prevent it from defaulting next month, when EUR14.4 billion in bonds have to be redeemed.
