Natural resources drive almost 20% of Canada’s economy, Ottawa says

Joe Oliver wants Canadians to know Ottawa is not just about supporting bitumen production and pipeline projects and indirectly hurting Ontario manufacturers — the Department of Natural Resources presides over almost a fifth of the Canadian economy.

Latest figures parsed by Mr. Oliver’s department shows the sector contributed 15% directly to Canada’s nominal GDP and another 4% indirectly last year. The sector, comprising energy, forestry, metals and minerals, provided 800,000 direct jobs and an additional 800,000 in indirect jobs — or 10% of the country’s overall employment.

“It’s not all oil sands and it’s not all Alberta. It is forestry in British Columbia, potash and uranium in Saskatchewan, mining in Ontario’s Sudbury Basin, hydropower in Quebec and all the related supply chains,” said Mr. Oliver said in a speech in Toronto.
