Jobless Claims Drop, Remain Elevated |
Wall Street Journal - Sep 20, 2012 |
The number of U.S. workers filing applications for jobless benefits remained elevated last week, showing that the labor market is still struggling to sustain improvements.
In a separate report, the Conference Board's index of leading economic indicators fell 0.1% in August, suggesting little momentum for the U.S. economy
Initial jobless claims, a measure of layoffs, were down by 3,000 to a seasonally adjusted 382,000 in the week ended Sept. 15, the Labor Department said Thursday. But claims for the week ended Sept. 8, which were revised up to 385,000 from an initially reported 382,000, were elevated because of business closures after Hurricane Isaac, the Labor Department said.
Last week's figure is above expectations. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires forecast 373,000 new applications for jobless benefits last week.
The four-week moving average of claims-—which smooths out weekly data—increased by 2,000 to 377,750. That is the highest level since the week ended June 30.
